World champion Giles Scott faces a battle to win the Finn class at the Trofeo Princesa Sofía as the British star still trails New Zealand’s Josh Junior after the third day of racing in Spain's Bay of Palma.

Scott struggled throughout yesterday’s racing with 11th and 45th place finishes and, although the latter result was discarded, it still leavesthe Briton six points adrift of his rival.

The Rio 2016 bound sailor fell further behind after finishing as the runner-up to Junior in the opening race of the day, but the Kiwi athlete was only able to finish fifth in the second competition.

It allowed Scott to close the gap to four points, with Junior still leading on a tally of 15, after he placed second in the final race of the third day.

"It was a lot better today, yesterday was a bit frustrating really,” Scott, the three-time world champion, said.

“I got it all wrong, a concertina of errors, so it’s great to get two solid results today and keep myself in there.

“A long hard day, lots of waiting, and when the wind did come in it came in strong."

Scott’s compatriot Tom Squires remains out in front in the men’s RS:X standings on seven points after a third place finish in the day’s only race.

It helped him move three points clear of Greece’s Vyron Kokkalanis, who could only manage a seventh place result.

Russia’s Olga Maslivets has a comfortable nine point lead over France’s Charline Picon in the women’s standings, after she earned another victory.

The most dominant sailors as the regatta continue to be Australia’s Mathew Belcher and Will Ryan, with the duo having won two more races in the men’s 470 class.

They now lie 14 points clear of the United States’ Stu McNay and Dave Hughes in the standings ahead of the final three days of racing.

In the women’s competition, Fernanda Oliveira and Ana Barbachan currently top the leaderboard on seven points, with The Netherlands’ Afrodite Kyranakou and Anneloes van Veen nine adrift of the Brazilian pairing.

There could be Dutch success in the 49erFX event as Annemiek Bekkering and Annerre Duetz have a narrow two point advantage over Denmark’s Jena Mai Hansen and Katja Steen.

It followed the pairing claiming a victory and a fourth place finish during the day’s racing.

The men’s 49er class is also closely fought as Spain’s Diego Botín and Iago López lead on 15 points with nearest challengers Nico Delle and Nikolaus Resch of Austria just three points behind.

Spain’s Erik Heil and Thomas Plossel are also in contention on 20 points.

The regatta is crucial to several sailors’ chances of appearing at Rio 2016 with the final European Olympic berths due to be awarded at the event of the regatta.
