Paralympic and world champion Walid Ktila lived up to expectations in front of his home crowd as he powered to victory in the T34 100 metres race on the opening day of the third International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics Grand Prix meeting of the season at the Rades Athletics Stadium in Tunis.

Ktila, who also won the 200m at London 2012 and claimed a haul of four titles at last year’s IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha, clocked a time of 15.14sec to secure gold.

The Tunisian success continued when Fethi Zouinkhi posted a time of 14.47 to secure the T54 crown over the same distance and Yassine Gharbi topped the podium in the T52/53/54 400m event in 51.64.

Elsewhere on the track, Mahamane Sacko of Mali pipped Ivory Coast’s Akue N'guessan Dieudonne Kouassi to gold in the T46 200m, crossing the line in 23.50.

His compatriot Oumar Sidibe stopped the clock at 12.92 to seal the T38 100m title.

World Championships bronze medallist Edmilsa Governo of Mozambique, who is just 18-years-old, clinched her first IPC Athletics Grand Prix success of the season by winning the women’s T12 400m in a time of 1min 00.38sec.

The host country did not disappoint out in the field as reigning world champion Hania Aidi eased to gold in the F53/54/55 javelin in Tunis thanks to her fourth-round throw of 16.91 metres, with the rest of the field more than three metres adrift of her best attempt.

Her compatriot and double world champion Raoua Tlili finished comfortably ahead of fellow Tunisian Fathia Amaimia to reign supreme in the F40/41 shot put, recording a best effort of 9.60m.

There was another Tunisian one-two in the women’s F32/34 shot event as Maroua Ibrahmi’s 5.79m was enough for her to take victory in front of Saida Nayli, who recorded 4.37m to earn silver.

Abderrahim Missouni of Algeria saw off a strong field in the men’s F32 shot put competition to claim a superb triumph by virtue of a last round throw of 9.13m.

His effort saw him top the podium, with Poland’s world bronze medallist Maciej Sochal second on 8.32m.

Missouni’s team-mate and Paralympic bronze medallist Mounir Bakiri was forced to settle for third.

The Algerian haul was improved by Hamza Kais, winner of the F32/51/52/53 discus with a best attempt of 15.00m, while compatriot Mohamed Ouchene took the F55/56/57 honours with 40.41m.

Another Algerian athlete, Nadia Medjmedj, threw 17.59m to clinch gold in the F56/57 javelin competition.

Tunisia’s Ibtissem Saidi managed a best effort of 7.63m to seal top spot in the women’s F44/46 discus.

Poland’s Anna Trener was arguably the star performer on day one as her time of 13.72 handed her gold in the T35/36/37/38 100m before she proved too strong in the T20/37/38 long jump by leaping 4.61m.

Action in the Tunisian capital is due to continue tomorrow.
