New Zealand moved to within two points of overall leaders Fiji as they beat South Africa 19-14 in a thrilling final to win the World Rugby Sevens Series event in Vancouver.

Sam Dickson, Kurt Baker and Lewis Ormond all scored tries for the All Blacks to help guide them to their third triumph of the current Series after they also won the competitions in Wellington and Sydney.

Seabelo Senatla and Rosco Speckman managed to go over for the Blitzboks but it wasn’t enough as the New Zealanders held on for victory.

The result at the BC Place stadium continues the intense battle for top spot on the standings, with the first three sides separated by just two points.

Fiji remain in pole position on 106 points despite finishing fourth at the Vancouver Sevens following a 19-12 defeat at the hands of Australia, who occupy second place on 105, in the third-place play-off.

New Zealand are a further point behind the Australians on 104.

“We struggled last week in Vegas with the new team, getting our combinations together but this week we really wanted to go better and I am just so pleased we won the final because it has been a hard week,” New Zealand captain Tim Mikkelson said.

“We let ourselves down last week and dropped down the table and we really wanted to finish strong in this tournament.

“It's amazing to win this in this amazing venue in Canada, it's just been awesome.”

New Zealand had earlier overcome arch-rivals Australia in the semi-finals as they ran in four tries on their way to a high-scoring 29-18 success.

South Africa, who had been in ruthless form on day one, scoring 16 tries and conceding just one on their way to reaching the quarter-finals, produced a scintillating display to end Fiji’s pursuit of the Vancouver Sevens crown with a 31-19 win in their last four contest.

The Blitzboks had picked up where they left off in their last eight clash with Argentina, setting up a meeting with the Fijians by hammering Argentina 27-0.

New Zealand had progressed to the semi-final stage by ousting the United States 17-5.

Samoa were able to end the first-ever World Rugby Sevens Series event to be held in Canada on a positive note as they clinched the plate by with a 31-19 triumph against the Americans in the plate final.

There was success for the raucous home crowd to cheer as Canada lifted the bowl thanks to a pulsating 19-17 victory over France.

The next event in the Series takes place in Hong Kong from April 8 to 10.
