Hosts the United States overcame surprise package Kenya to set up a semi-final meeting with defending World Rugby Sevens Series champions Fiji at the Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.

Tries from Danny Barrett, Perry Baker, Martin Iosefo and Zack Test gave the American outfit a comfortable 26-14 victory against the African nation in the quarter-finals to ensure they reached the last four.

Kenya had earlier sprung a surprise as they beat New Zealand, winners of the past two Sevens World Series tournaments in Wellington and Sydney, 22-0 to finish top of Pool A.

But they were unable to replicate that form against a spirited United States team despite another excellent display from Collins Injera, who notched his fourth try of the weekend in the loss to the host nation.

The United States face an arduous task if they are to triumph on home soil as they will clash with Ben Ryan’s Fiji, who thrashed Japan 43-7 in their quarter-final clash thanks largely to two tries from Jasa Veremalua.

Osea Kolinisau, Jerry Tuwai, Pio Tuwai, Savenaca Rawaca and Amenoni Nasilasila also went over to give the Fijian team a resounding victory as they bid to retain their advantage at the top of the overall standings.

The other semi-final at the Las Vegas Sevens, the fifth event in the Series, will be a mouthwatering encounter between South Africa and Australia.

The Blitzboks were in ominous form from the outset as they hammered the Americans 36-0 to claim top spot in Pool D, before they went on to edge a low-scoring affair with New Zealand in the last eight as they were on the right side of a 14-7 scoreline.

A double of converted tries from Seabelo Senatla proved enough to secure a semi-final berth for South Africa, with Lewis Ormond getting on the scoresheet for the All Blacks.

Australia’s pursuit of a first triumph of the season continues as they proved too strong for Argentina, progressing to the next round by virtue of a commanding 26-12 success.

Sam Myers was the star of the show as he scored two of his side’s four tries, with the others coming from Ed Jenkins and Allan Fa'alava'au.

The Australians had hammered England, who finished bottom of the pool, 36-7 in their third and final group match to reach the last eight and will take on South Africa tomorrow in a battle of the only two unbeaten sides left in the competition.
