June 6 - British canoeist Rachel Cawthorn (pictured) has finished the World Cup in Duisburg with three medals, including two gold, after racing to victory in the 500 metres and 1,000m.

The 21-year-old kayaker from Surrey had earlier won the bronze in the 200m on Friday.

Cawthorn's victory in the 500m came at the expense of two Olympic champions in Germany's Katrin Wagner-Augustin and Italy's Josefa Idem.

Cawthorn said: "In the final I couldn't see Idem or Wagner but I did have the Dane [Henriette Engelhansen] nearby, she set off really fast so I just concentrated on chasing her.

"There were the big names in the 500m, some of which hadn't competed in individual events yesterday, but I felt confident with what I had to do."Britain's

The 21-year-old European bronze medallist was just as delighted after her victory in the 1,000m.

She said: "It feels like we've been waiting a while to race because we [the women] didn't do the previous World Cup races.

"It meant I didn't have a feel for where I would be against the competition, but I was ready to compete and looking forward to it.

"In the actual race I was up against strong German competition, I had a good start, got caught up and then accelerated at the 500m mark.

"I just focused on thinking about going quickly and not the competition."

Cawthorn began her sporting career as a swimmer, before being talent-spotted for kayaking.

After coming fourth in the world last year, she will now set her sights on the European Championships from July 2-4 and then the World Championships in August.

Elsewhere in the event at Duisburg, fellow Britons Louisa Sawers and Jessica Walker won bronze in the K2 1,000m.

Olympic champion Tim Brabants, back in full-time training since giving up his medical career in February, was fourth in the 1,000m and eighth in the men's K1 500m.
