kiwi house_fire_fence_collapsedAugust 9 - Kiwi House in central London is set to be reopened following two explosions at the venue yesterday that forced it to be temporarily closed.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee's (NZOC) hospitality and entertainment headquarters at 1 Granary Square in King's Cross has been a popular hangout since London 2012 begun but a crisis occurred there yesterday evening at the pop-up bar at the back of the building when a gas bottle on a barbecue exploded (pictured).

Around 300 people were at the bar at the time and were forced to hurriedly evacuate the venue before a second gas cylinder exploded, while the London Fire Brigade arrived on the scene to put out the fire.

The NZOC have confirmed that no-one was injured by the blast and that they will be reopening the venue until the end of the Olympics on Sunday (August 12).

But the pop-up bar and barbecue area will now be closed.

"Kiwi House in London will re-open this evening from 1800h (GMT) after an outdoor BBQ fire last night temporarily closed the facility," said an NZOC statement.

"The venue underwent checks by the relevant authorities this morning and approvals were given to re-open.

"Kiwi House will continue to offer New Zealand gourmet pies, coffee and beverages and play the New Zealand live SKY feed on the big screens.

"The garden BBQ area will remain closed.

"The fire broke out in Kiwi House yesterday evening at approximately 7.30pm and guests were swiftly and safely evacuated.

"Damage was limited to a corner of the outdoor BBQ area and the 1 Granary Square building in which Kiwi House is located was untouched.

"No injuries were reported."
