jamel herring_10-11-11November 17 - USA Boxing have named the five boxers who will represent them at the London 2012 Olympic test event taking place at the ExCeL Centre later next week.

The mixed squad of three male and two female athletes will see light welterweight Jamel Herring (pictured above left), heavyweight Joseph Williams and super heavyweight Lenroy Thompson fighting in the men's competition, while lightweight Queen Underwood and middleweight Franchon Crews are set to fight in the women's category.

The five weight classes representing America in London were dictated to USA Boxing by the International Boxing Association (AIBA), with the competition to take place from November 24 to 27.

Leading the team in London will be USA Boxing national coach Joe Zanders, who will be hoping for a good showing in the capital ahead of next year.

Women's boxing will make its official Olympic debut at London 2012, while the US have traditionally been the dominant force in men's Olympic boxing, producing all-time greats like Cassius Clay - later known as Muhammad Ali - and Sugar Ray Leonard.

American's best medal prospect at London 2012 is set to come in the form of 24-year-old flyweight Rau'shee Warren (pictured right).

Warren became the first US boxer in history to qualify for three Olympic Games after he won bronze at the recent AIBA World Boxing Championships in Baku, beating Khalid Yafai of England along the way.

Meanwhile, at the same time that the London 2012 test event takes place, USA Boxing will send a second squad of 13 athletes to compete in the World Cup of Petroleum Countries in Surgut, Russia.

Following the event in Russia, the team will travel to the Ukraine for the head-to-head dual competition.

The squads representing Team USA at the competitions were selected based upon their finishes at the US Olympic Team Trials for the men and the 2011 USA Boxing National Championships for the women.
