james_higgins_19-09-11September 19 - British Gymnastics has announced its team to compete at the World Trampoline Championships at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham from November 17 to 20.

James Higgins (pictured), Luke Strong, Jack Helme and Nathan Bailey will compete in the men's individual event, while Laura Gallagher, Emma Smith, Kat Driscoll and Bryony Page will be in action in the women's competition.

Strong and Bailey will also team up in the men's synchro, while Gallagher and Page, and Driscoll and Amanda Parker, will pair up in the women's event.

The championships will be the first qualification event for the London 2012 Olympics.

To be eligible for the Games, the gymnasts must make the top eight in Birmingham – where two places per individual class are available – or go to the Olympic test event in January, when just one place per class will be available.

"As we have progressed towards London 2012, we have made significant performance gains across the trampoline programme, with many of our athletes showing real podium potential," said British Gymnastics Olympic performance director Tim Jones.

"We are pleased to be able to name such a strong team for this event, which will give us the best chance of not only qualifying places for the London Olympic Games, but also showcasing our exceptional talent in front of the British public."

Competition to make the British squad has been stiff, with two trial events run in Bath during August and September to decide the final makeup of the team.

"With both squads – particularly the women – being so competitive, selection has been a nailbiting process, which has produced some truly world-class performances to just make the team," said Alan Edge, British Gymnastics programme director for trampoline.

"These gymnasts now have a genuine chance to qualify GB's largest ever trampoline team for the Games and be in real contention for Worlds medals."

The International Gymnastics Federation also announced the latest world rankings this week, showing British champion Driscoll at number one in the women's list, with Page and Smith also in the top 10.

British men's champion Strong and his teammate Higgins are among the world's top 20 in the men's rankings.
