Alistair_Brownlee_wins_in_Hyde_Park_August_7_2011August 7 - Exactly a year to the day before he hopes to be crowned as Olympic champion on the same course, Alistair Brownlee made it a British double at the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series in Hyde Park with a dominant victory that underlined his position as the sport's dominant personality.

The 23-year-old Yorkshireman, the 2009 world champion, controlled the race to finish in one hour 50min 09sec, beating Russian Alexander Bryukhankov by 25 seconds with younger brother Jonathan taking third after overhauling current world champion Javier Gomez with a superb run.

The victory completed a memorable weekend for British triathlon after Helen Jenkins won yesterday's women's race.

Brownlee overcame the wet conditions on the proposed course for London 2012 passing famous landmarks such as Buckingham Palace and the Wellington Arch after taking control of the race during the seven-lap cycling leg.

"To be honest I couldn't believe I got away on the bike," he said afterwards.

"I was worried I would be attacked on the bike."

He said he was pleased his brother Jonathan joined him on the podium and that he enjoyed the support of the crowd.

"The big goal was to make sure we both got on the podium, and we did," he said.

"It's one of the best receptions I've ever had.

"It was a great experience."

Asked whether today's performance was the best of his life, he said:  "I hope not.

"I hope I'm going to be better next year."

It was the tenth World Championship Series race that Brownlee has won, even more impressive considering 20 in all have been contested.

He said afterwards that it was an achievement he was proud of.

"Oh fantastic, I'm not one for figures too much, but that's absolutely wonderful," said Brownlee, who is now second behind Gomez in this year's World Championship Series having won three of the five races.

"I just turn up at races and win what I can and to be that consistent is great."

Jonathan had to fight off a challenge from Gomez, last year's winner, to take bronze.

"I'm really pleased, but absolutely shattered," he said.

"I wanted to come in the top three and I've done that.

"When I got off the bike I knew first and second places had gone, but everyone was racing for third.

"It was a really hard race and Javier kept pushing me to the end."

Gomez said he was pleased with his fourth place, but hopes to finish higher at next year's Olympics.

"I'm happy with my fourth place, but I hope to do better next year," he said.

"It was great to race on the proposed Olympic course."
