Jessica_Phua_head_and_shouldersAugust 2 - Jessie Phua has been selected as the Chef de Mission for Singapore's Olympic team to compete at London 2012, it has been announced today.


The announcement was made by the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) 

Phua is the President of the Singapore Bowling Federation, which is not yet recognised as an Olympic sport. 

The 56 year-old is also the President of bowling's world governing body, the FIQ, having been elected in 2007 as the first woman to lead the organisation. 

She is also nominated Member of the Singapore Parliament. 

Phua is a member of the SNOC ruling Council and has been awarded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) "Women and Sport" Achievement Diploma, recognising her outstanding achievement and contributions made to develop, encourage and strengthen the participation of women and girls at all levels in the sports world.

She was also the Chef de Mission for Singapore's team at the 2009 Southeast Asian Games in Laos in 2009. 

Singapore sent a team of 25 athletes in six sports to Beijing in 2008.

The team won Singapore's first Olympic medal since independence when Feng Tianwei, Li Jiawei and Wang Yuegu won a silver in the women's table tennis team event. 

It was Singapore's first medal since the Rome Olympics in 1960. 

Phua's first official duty will be attend the Chef de Mission Seminar in London, which opens on August 9 and lasts until August 12.
