Nicola Adams_1June 6 - The Sheffield-based women's GB boxing squad have laid down a strong marker for the London 2012 Olympics as they secured a hat trick of medals, including two gold, at the European Union Championships in Katowice.

The British charge was led by the superb flyweight Nicola Adams (pictured), as the 28-year-old from Leeds produced a phenomenal performance to defeat Poland's double world champion Karolina Michalczuk in front of her home crowd.

Adams, who last year claimed silver at the AIBA Women's World Championships, was far too fast for Michalczuk and after surging ahead, she stayed out of reach of her rival to secure the gold in the 51kg category with an impressive 17-13 win.

Britain's second gold medal came from Liverpool's Natasha Jonas, as the 26-year-old light welterweight saw off another home favourite in the form of Oliwia Luczak to claim victory in the 64kg category.

Using excellent footwork and fast hands, the Liverpudlian left Luczak trailing behind to win 17-7, repeating her feat of winning gold at the EU Championships after she claimed victory in the same event in 2009 in Bulgaria.

Britain's third and final medal came as Chantelle Cameron secured bronze in the 60kg lightweight category in what was her first tournament at the weight.

The 19-year-old from Northampton reached the semi-final with relative ease but came up short against the formidable Katie Taylor of Ireland, who was going for her fourth EU lightweight title, as she was overpowered and was defeated by a score of 28-10.

Taylor, who is being heavily tipped for gold at London 2012, where women's boxing will make its Olympic debut, dominated her Polish opponent from start to finish to run out a comfortable winner.

In total, Ireland claimed three medals, with Taylor winning gold and Lauragh O'Neill and Laoise Traynor picking up bronze medals.

Dominic O'Rourke, director of boxing at the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) said: "Katie was absolutely brilliant.

"She produced another fantastic performance today.

"She showed great balance and coordination in the final.

"She peaked over the last two days at these Championships and we're thrilled with the win."

Irish team manager, Majella Loftus added: "Katie boxed out of her skin.

"She was 5-1 ahead after the first round and she just kept getting stronger and stronger after that.

"It was a fantastic all round performance."
