Phil_MarshApril 5 - Britain's Philip Marsh has become the Epee Junior world champion with a 15-10 victory against Egypt's Ayman Alaa El Din Fayz.

His compatriot Jack Hudson fell at the last 16 stage to Finish third seed Alexander Lahtinen

The 16-year-old was ranked 40th out of 133 contenders, meaning he faced a knockout tie just to get to the last 64.

Armenian Robert Khachtatryan was up next for Marsh, who dispatched him 15-9 before taking on Italy's eighth seed Andrea's Valllasio, and managing to upset the odds with a comfortable 15-8 win.

The Bradford youngster won through to the quarter finals, where he faced Hungary#s Matyas File, who gave him a tough time before the Briton emerged a 15-14 winner.

His semi-final then saw him take on former Russian world champion Nikita Glazkov, and despite having lost 15-3 to the same opponent last month, this time he was on top, winning 15-10.

In a closely contested final, Marsh came through to edge out Alaa El Din Fayz and claim a remarkable victory.

"It hasn't fully sunk in as it was completely unexpected," he said.

"I have to touch the medal every now and again to remind myself.

"I don't normally worry about my appearance and suddenly people are checking my hair and straightening my collars."

Piers Martin, Chief Executive of British Fencing, added: "Congratulations to Philip on this remarkable result for a fencer who is still a cadet."
