FIBAMarch 21 – Reigning champions United states have been drawn against Russia, Japan and Argentina in the preliminary round of the women's under-19 basketball World Championships this summer.


The Americans will be hoping to make it four wins on the trot when the FIBA tournament gets under way in Chile on July 21.

The draw at Puerto Montt pitched 16 teams from all five of FIBA's continental zones into four groups of four in the preliminary round, which will be played in a standard round-robin format.

The groups are: A: Canada, China, Egypt, Italy; B Argentina, Japan, Russia, USA; C: Australia, Chile, France, Nigeria; D: Brazil, Chinese Taipei, Slovenia, Spain.

The three top placed teams from each group will advance to the eighth final round which consists of two pools of six.

During that stage of the competition, each team faces the three new opponents in their group.

The top eight teams from the eighth final round will then move on to the quarter-finals.

The semi-finals will be played the following day and the finals on July 31.

Past editions of the event have seen a number of international stars in the making, including Elizabeth Cambage, Diana Taurasi, Erika de Suza Machado, Eva Viteckova, Lauren Jackson Jackon, Lijie Miao, Hamchetou Maiga Ba, Ilona Korstin, Janeth Arcain, Natalia Zasulskaya, Lisa Leslie and Michelle Timms.
