The 2028 Olympics are considering a new golf format, a sport that has recently returned to the Olympic lineup. Organisers are exploring a mixed team format where top male and female golfers would compete together for their respective countries.

According to Antony Scanlon, Executive Director of the International Golf Federation, there is strong backing for this format. As reported by Golf Monthly, he stated, "At the beginning of next year, they should make the decision as to what events will be in the program for LA.

"We're hoping that the fact that there's no additional athletes and no additional resources required that the mixed event would be approved by them, especially given the support of the organising committee.”

Scanlon also noted that top male and female professional golfers are in favor of the concept. All golf events in the 2028 Olympics will take place at one of the most iconic venues: Riviera Country Club, currently hosting the PGA Tour's Genesis Invitational.

The submitted proposal outlines 16 pairs competing over 36 holes, featuring rounds of foursomes and four-ball better ball. Each country would typically field one team to ensure widespread representation.

The mixed team event is scheduled to occur on the Sunday and Monday between the men's and women's individual tournaments, both of which will proceed as planned. The men's individual competition, where Xander Schauffele emerged victorious in 2021, would be rescheduled to accommodate this addition.

This format would not alter the structure of the individual events. There will still be separate fields of 60 men and 60 women determined by the Olympic Golf Ranking. Athletes could potentially compete in both events.
