The best U19 football teams from the Old Continent will compete in Lithuania from 14-27 July and Daina Gudzinevičiūtė, Olympic champion and president of the Lithuanian National Olympic Committee (LTOK), will be the ambassador of the UEFA U19 Women's Football Championship.

"Our Lithuanian national team will have a special opportunity to compete in front of their fans. The walls of the home will inspire our footballers during the tournament. I gladly agreed to be an ambassador for this championship - it is especially important to support the younger generation, who are not only our present, but also our future," said the LTOK President.

"The Championships will take place just before the most important sporting event of the year, the Olympic Games in Paris. That is why this European U19 Women's Football Championship is a great opportunity to show the unity of our Lithuanian people when we come to the stadiums to support our players with all our hearts," Gudzinevičiūtė added.

Lithuania are in Group A against Serbia, France and England, all of whom have a strong footballing tradition. The national teams of the Netherlands, Ireland, Spain and Germany are in Group B. Gudzinevičiūtė, the Sydney Olympic Games gold medallist, hopes that her role as an ambassador for this championship will encourage the general public to take an interest in women's sport.

"The epicentre of the king of sports - football - is constantly surrounded by men with huge contracts and fame, while women, especially girls, can remain on the sidelines. Perhaps the invaluable experience of competing against the strongest European teams will lay the foundations for the Lithuanian players to continue their careers in adult sport," she continued.

"Participating in major international tournaments is a good way to get noticed by clubs looking for football talent. We are delighted with the efforts of the Lithuanian Football Federation to bring an event of this level to Lithuania," said the LTOK president, who has also become the face of the European U-19 Championship video clip

"I personally approached Daina Gudzinevičiūtė and asked her if she would be willing to become the event's ambassador, and she gladly agreed, so we thank her from the bottom of our hearts. The new ambassador of the event will attend our matches and contribute to communication, so we consider this a very big success in the organisation of the championship," said the president of the Lithuanian Football Federation, Edgaras Stankevičius

Lithuania will play all their matches at the Darius and Girėnas Stadium. France and Serbia will play the first match of the championship on 14 July, but the official opening of the championship will be the match between Lithuania and England in Kaunas on the same day, starting at 17:00. The final stage of the tournament will be played at the Kaunas, Marijampolė and Jonava stadiums.
