President Schormann has announced his intention not to seek re-election as President of the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) at the upcoming 73rd UIPM Congress in November 2024.

At the age of 77, Klaus Schormann intends to conclude his eightht term as President by the end of this year, thus concluding his leadership of the worldwide Modern Pentathlon community which began in July 1993.

Klaus Schormann, UIPM President, said: "It has been the privilege of my life to serve the UIPM as President. I give my best every day and I will continue to carry this responsibility until December 2024, always keeping in mind the need to keeo our multi-sport modern and relevant for new generations as a pillar of the Olympic Movement."

"In the interests of good governance, the time has come for me to pass the mantle to a new President, to whom I will offer my guidance and advice in an appropriate capacity. I have built my life around this role, and I will have much to offer the UIPM as we move into an exciting new era," concluded Schormann.

At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Schormann will oversee his eighth Olympic Pentathlon in his capacity as UIPM President, symbolising the conclusion of the equestrian era. Having served as a senior administrator since 1972, Schormann has no plans to retire from the Modern Pentathlon, signalling his continued commitment to the sport.

Juan Antonio Samaranch, 1st Vice President of the UIPM and Vice President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), said: "Klaus Schormann will leave an extraordinary legacy when he steps down as UIPM President at the end of this year. Klaus is much more than a hard worker - he is an intelligent strategist, an open-minded innovator and a statesmanlike leader"

"It has been a great pleasure to serve alongside Klaus on the Executive Board for almost three decades. His successor as President will have a very hard act to follow, but he has given them a strong platform as the sport enters an exciting new era of growth."

Janusz Peciak, UIPM Board Member for Sport and 1976 Montreal Olympic Champion, said: "My acquaintance with Schormann goes back to the late 1960s. Even then, he was known as a very friendly, caring, good person, with great charisma and a sense of humour. I know him as a man who never gives up and always achieves his goals. He saved the Modern Pentathlon from many difficulties".

Yasser Hefny, Chairman of the UIPM Athletes' Committee, commented: "In my role on the Athletes' Committee, I have had the opportunity to work closely with Klaus. I have always found him to be a strong Union President who has been able to lead his team to develop our sport to its full potential. He has managed to maintain our presence in the Olympic programme."
