Peru's Lucca Mesinas and Canada's Sanoa Dempfle-Olin sealed surfing places at next year's Olympics with men's shortboard gold and women's silver respectively at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago.

Mesinas reached the men's quarter-finals during surfing's Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, while Dempfle-Olin is set for her Games debut at next year's competition In Teahupo'o, around 15,000 kilometres away from Paris on the island of Tahiti.

In the men's final on the Punta de Lobos beach, around 200km from the Chilean capital Santiago, Mesinas scored 13.16 points for a dominant victory over Colombia's Francisco Bellorín, who notched 9.10.

He expressed his elation at securing a second consecutive Olympic appearance.

"I feel happy, mainly for the medal for my country, which is the most important thing, along with qualification," Mesinas said.

"It’s incredible.

"I’m happy to secure my spot because I want to be at the Olympics, represent Peru and fulfil the dream of winning an Olympic medal for Peru."

Miguel Tudela earned a bronze medal for Peru with 8.57 points against Mesinas.

The women's shortboard final was won by Brazil's Tatiana Weston-Webb, who had already qualified for Paris 2024 through this year's World Surf League.

That meant the qualification place went to runner-up Dempfle-Olin, who notched 10.13 points to Weston-Webb's 12.33.

Dempfle-Olin earlier consigned Costa Rica's Leilani McGonagle to the bronze medal, winning by 10.00 to 4.20.

A further eight men's and 10 women's places are available at Paris 2024 through next year's International Surfing Association World Surfing Games and a single universality berth.

In the non-Olympic disciplines, there was a Peruvian double in the longboard.

Benoit Clemente won the men's final against Chile's Rafael Cortéz, and María Fernanda Reyes defeated Chloé Calmon of Brazil in the women's decider.

The United States' Zane Schweitzer earned the men's stand up paddle (SUP) surf gold medal against Luiz Diniz of Brazil, while Colombia's Isabela Brady won the women's final against Brazil's Aline Adisaka.

An American double in the SUP races concluded surfing competition at Santiago 2023.

Connor Baxter triumphed in the men's in 12min 49.9sec and Candice Appleby in 15:24.9 in the women's.

Having made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, surfing is set to feature at three consecutive Games having been added to the Los Angeles 2028 programme.

"The more that surfing is a part of the Olympic Movement, the more valuable it proves itself to be," long-serving ISA President Fernando Aguerre said.

"Congratulations to each of the gold medallists and to Lucca and Sanoa, who surfed so incredibly to earn their place in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and represent their countries next year in Tahiti."
