The Solheim Cup is perfectly poised going into the final day with Europe and the United States level at 8-8 after a second fascinating day of action at the Finca Cortesin Golf Club in Spain.

After being whitewashed in yesterday’s opening foursomes matches, Europe shared today’s contests 2-2, before winning the afternoon fourballs contests 3-1 to leave the contest deadlocked heading into tomorrow’s singles in Casares.

History suggests Europe could triumph tomorrow, as on the four previous occasions the women’s team golf event has been level heading into the final day, the home team has won - the US twice and Europe twice.

In the foursomes Europe triumphed in the top match as Spain’s Carlota Ciganda, and her Danish playing partner Emily Kristine Pedersen won 2&1.

Ciganda and Pedersen led all the way on the back nine against Lilia Vu and Jennifer Kupcho, before Ciganda holed the winning putt on the 17th.

In match two, Lexi Thompson and Megan Khang of the United States won one up against European duo Anna Nordqvist of Sweden and Ireland’s Leona Maguire.

The US pair took the lead with a birdie on the 11th, and after being pegged back to level, birdied 17 to take the decisive advantage.

The US were big winners in match three, with Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz leading all the way after a birdie on the opening hole, eventually prevailing 5&3 over England’s Georgia Hall and France’s Céline Boutier.

In the final foursomes match, Europe’s Swiss duo of Maja Stark and Linn Grant won one up, with a birdie on 17 giving them the decisive lead over US pair Danielle Kang and Andrea Lee.

This gave the US a 7-5 lead heading into the fourballs, and Europe were dominant in the top match in this format, as Britain’s Charley Hull and Maguire, won 4&3 against Korda and Ally Ewing.

Hull and Maguire took the lead on the second hole after a US bogey and did not look back, leading all the way until the contest ended on the 15th.

In match two, Cheyenne Knight and Angel Yin won two up against Nordqvist and fellow Swede Caroline Hedwall.

The European pair led on the 11th, but things turned after two US birdies on 13 gave them a lead they carried through to the end.

Match three saw Sweden’s Madelene Sagström, playing alongside Pedersen, win 2&1 against US duo Rose Zhang and Andrea Lee.

Sagström and Pedersen took the lead after both players birdied the seventh, before sealing victory with a hole to spare.

Ciganda and Grant won 2&1 in the bottom match to level the contest overall, defeating US duo Danielle Kang and Vu.

Grant birdied 11, winning the hole, to give Europe a lead they maintained, before closing the victory out on the 17th.

The contest will now be decided by tomorrow’s 12 singles matches, with Europe looking for 14 points to retain the trophy and win it for the third time in a row, and the US requiring 14.5 points to win the cup outright.
