The first quota spots have been secured on the penultimate day of the African Olympic Boxing Qualification Tournament for Paris 2024.

Fighters who reached the finals of five women’s categories earned quota spots for their respective countries at next summer’s Olympic Games, as well as booking places in the finals of the event held at the Dakar Arena in Senegal.

The first places were filled in the women’s under-54 kilograms category, with Moroccan Widad Bertal a dominant 5-0 winner over Sara Haghighat-Joo of Sierra Leone, with a display featuring some impressive long-range punching.

In the women’s under-60kg category, Nigerian Cynthia Ogunsemilore earned a quota place after defeating Felistars Nkandu of Zambia, after the referee stopped the contest during the second round.

Ogunsemilore used her long reach and strong jab to score early points, and after twice sending Nkandu to the canvas, got the win when the contested was halted.

Ogunsemilore will face Hadjila Khelif, who secured a quota place for Algeria, in the final after Khelif was a comprehensive 5-0 victor over Mariam Sidibé of the Ivory Coast.

In the women’s under-50kg, the first quota place went to Algeria after Roumaysa Boualam overcame Adeola Oyesiji Omowunmi of Nigeria by unanimous decision.

Boualam's opponent in the final will be Yasmine Mouttaki, who earned a quota place for Morocco after a surprise 5-0 win against Benedicte Diyoka of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In the under-57kg, home athlete Mariatou Diallo was stopped in the second round of her contest against Hlimi Ep Moulaahi Khouloud, giving Tunisia a quota place.
