The City of Paris revealed plans earlier this year to open 60km of new cycle paths known as "Olympilanes" to connect venues in Paris to those in the north-eastern suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis.

Plans to accommodate Games visitors on bikes include 10,000 racks to be placed outside key sites, 3,000 permanent parking spots near the Stade de France and an expansion to the fleet of the rental scheme 'Vélib'.

Belliard, whose portfolio includes transport, revealed that 7km of the planned network is awaiting police approval, but is optimistic the work can be delivered in time for Paris 2024.

"What I expect is that we, particularly the Government, transform the words into actions and therefore allow us to move forward on the work that we are currently carrying out," he said, as reported by BFM TV.

The Paris Police headquarters said issues could include insufficient width of planned lanes or fears of an impact on traffic flow, but the City of Paris would be able to submit revised plans to take account of its feedback.

"The investigation of these files is the subject of constructive exchanges with municipal services and a majority do not raise any difficulties which cannot be technically overcome," it told BFM Paris.

"Some of them, however, lead the police prefect to issue unfavourable opinions or modification requirements on projects whose implementation would harm the circulation of emergency or intervention services of the police or the BSPP [Paris Fire Brigade]."

The French capital already featured 130km of cycle paths before the additions.

Transport is one of the key issues in the build-up to next year's Olympics and Paralympics, with particular concern over the inaccessibility of Paris' metro system.
