More than 100 athletes are set to represent Myanmar at this month's Asian Games in Hangzhou with the aim of securing medals in dragon boat racing, sepak takraw and wushu.

Myanmar’s Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs has announced that it will be sending a 173-strong delegation, including athletes, coaches and team officials.

A total of 63 male and 48 female athletes are poised to compete in archery, dragon boat racing, esports, football, sepak takraw, taekwondo and wushu.

"We expect to get medals from the sports of sepak takraw, Wushu and dragon boat racing in the Asian Games this year," Khun Jar Aung, director from Myanmar’s Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs Sports and Physical Education Department told Chinese official state news agency Xinhua.

Sepak takraw has proven to be a successful sport for Myanmar, capturing gold medals at both Guangzhou 2010 and Incheon 2014.

Myanmar, known as Burma until 1989, will be aiming to improve on its performance at Jakarta Palembang 2018 where it picked up just two medals, winning bronzes in sepak takraw and wushu.

It was Myanmar’s worst return since Hiroshima 1994.

The country’s best showing came at Bangkok 1970 when it won three golds, two silvers and seven bronzes.
