Irina Zaretska and Elena Quirici are set to go head-to-head to crown the new Grand Winner of the Female Kumite under-68 kilograms division at the Karate 1-Premier League event in Dublin.

The penultimate day of action at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena saw the line-ups for tomorrow’s finals confirmed.

Defending Grand Winner Zaretska of Azerbaijan, a silver medallist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, beat Ukraine’s Elina Sielimienieva 3-1 to secure her spot in the final.

There she will meet European champion Quirici of Switzerland who edged through a semi-final against Alizee Agier of France that had finished 2-2.

In the male kata category current Grand Winner Kakeru Nishiyama of Japan confirmed his status as number one in the standings after beating compatriot Aoi Funada by 44.00 to 43.00 to reach a second final of the season.

Nishiyama will face compatriot Sakichi Abe in the final, as he upset fellow Japanese karateka Kazumasa Moto by a scoreline of 43.50 to 42.50.

In the Female Kumite over-68kg division defending Grand Winner Ayaka Saito of Japan upset compatriot Yuzuki Sawae by decision after their encounter had ended 0-0 to book a spot in the final.

She will face Clio Ferracuti of Italy who is aiming to get a win at the fifth time of asking in a Premier League final, after convincingly overcoming former Grand Winner Ayumi Uekusa of Japan 8-1.

The Male Kumite under-84kg category final will feature Olympian Ivan Kvesić of Croatia, who edged past Greece’s Konstantinos Mastrogiannis in a contest that finished 5-5.

In the final he will meet Italian Michele Martini after the European champion, edged past compatriot Matteo Fiori in a contest that ended 1-1, to reach his first Premier League final of the season.

In the Female Kumite under-61kg category Japan’s Sarara Shimada continued her quest for a second successive Premier League title with a 6-4 semi-final win over Greece’s Konstantina Chrysopoulou.

In the final Shimada will face Fatma Naz Yenen of Turkey, who produced an upset in beating Giulia Angelucci of Italy 5-0.

The Male Kumite over +84kg category final will feature Ukraine’s Ryzvan Talibov who reached a fourth Premier League final after beating Anes Bostandzic of Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-0.

His opponent will be current continental champion Rodrigo Rojas of Chile, who reached his first Premier League final since 2016, after overcoming Babacar Seck Sakho of Spain 7-4.

The medal bouts at the season’s final Premier League event are due to take place tomorrow.
