The United States' National Basketball Association (NBA) players have propelled the five-time champions to the favourites tag for the Basketball World Cup set to begin tomorrow prior to the final on September 10.

Although still a weak American side with the NBA's top stars not playing, the likes of Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero and All-Defensive First Team player Mikal Bridges could still be enough to clinch a record-breaking sixth title.

The team will be led by four-time NBA Finals-winning coach Steve Kerr as they look to surpass Yugoslavia in the overall gold medals tally as both currently sit on five.

The US are joined by Jordan, Greece, and New Zealand in Group C, with their fixtures set to take place at the Mall of Asia Arena in the Philippines.

The 32-team tournament is due to take place across three nations, with Japan and Indonesia joining the Philippines.

Greece are expected to advance in second place in Group C behind the US and coach Dimitrios Itoudis has been hailed as one of the best basketball minds in the world.

The top two teams of each group, which features four sides, progress to a second round robin this time with four groups of four.

From there, the top two advance to the quarter-finals and traditional knockouts ensue.

The Dominican Republic, in Group A alongside the Philippines, Angola, and Italy, are thought to be one of the surprise packages of the tournament.

They boast a trio of NBA players in the form of Karl-Anthony Towns, Chris Duarte, and Lester Quinones.

Néstor García is also one of the most decorated head coaches of the tournament due to his victories at the 2012, 2014 and 2016 South American Championships and 2015 Americas Championship.

Serbia are expected to star in Group B against China, Puerto Rico, and South Sudan.

Lithuania and Montenegro are the ones to watch in Group C while Mexico and Egypt have not been tipped to go far in the tournament.

Australia are the best side on paper in Group E but their lack of size could give Germany a chance to overpower them with the likes of Dennis Schröder of the Toronto Raptors and the Orlando Magic's Franz Wagner.

Finland have the potential to cause an upset but alongside Japan they are not predicted to advance.

NBA All-Star Luka Doncic should carry Slovenia through Group F against Cape Verde, Georgia, and Venezuela while Spain could top Group G over Brazil, Iran, and the Ivory Coast.

Canada and France will clash for control of Group H leaving Latvia and Lebanon likely to miss out on qualification.
