The Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallist hit the ground running in the women's singles at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen with a dominant display to defeat Wang 21-10, 21-6.

Wang plugged away but was unable to stop Marín in her tracks as the Spanish star delivered a performance that demonstrated her credentials to challenge for another world crown.

The American player said she felt like she had got "hit by a truck" when facing Marín who she is tipped for the title.

"I feel like she’s ready for the Worlds," said Wang.

"She felt very on.

"It was very hard to find gaps."

Marín has good memories of the Danish city having captured her maiden world crown there in 2014 and will be setting her sights on a fourth gold to add to her glittering collection.

"Honestly, I want to play on Sunday and I want to go as high as I can but we want to go step by step," said Marín who was crowned European Games champion last month.

"I’m looking forward to playing tomorrow.

"I’m really close to my best level.

"I talked to my team last week and it’s the first time since my first injury that we didn’t make any change in our plan for this tournament, for the preparation.

"I’m really focused about this week, and as always I want to give my best.

"I wanted to show a great performance and I think I did today."

Marín will next face Thet Htar Thuzar of Myanmar who reached the third round of the World Championships for the first time.

Thet Htar was the beneficiary of a retirement as Canada’s 14th Michaelle Li was forced to pull out with a knee injury when 4-2 down in the opening game.

Japan’s second seed Akane Yamaguchi swept into the third round with a 21-7, 21-11 thrashing of Neslihan Arın of Turkey.

She will meet Thailand’s 13th seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan who came from behind to defeat South Korea’s Kim Ga-Eun 15-21, 21-18, 21-16.

There was disappointment for Denmark in the women’s singles, with Line Kjærsfeldt and Line Christophersen both suffering defeats.

Christophersen went down 21-16, 21-13 to Chinese Taipei’s fourth seed Tai Tzu Ying before Kjærsfeldt battled hard only to lose 21-13, 14-21, 21-14 to China’s Han Yue.

Other winners in the bottom half of the women’s singles draw were Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong and Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung.

Chochuwong overcame Brazil’s Juliana Viana Vieira 24-22, 21-14, while Tunjung defeated Yeo Jia Min of Singapore 21-10, 22-24, 21-14.

Denmark suffered a further loss when Rasmus Gemke was sent crashing to a 21-13, 21-8 defeat to China’s eighth seed Shi Yu Qi in the men's singles second round.

Anders Antonsen ensured it was not a disastrous day for the hosts when he dug deep to defeat Malaysia’s Ng Tze Yong 24-22, 21-16.

The match was ultimately decided in an incredibly tight opening game that could have gone either way.

Antonsen brought up the first game point at 20-19 courtesy of net cord only to slip when he had the chance to wrap up the game.

Ng then had a set point of his own when Antonsen netted but the Dane manged to stave it off.

After taking the next point, Antonsen thought he had clinched the game with a smash down the line only for the decision to be overturned following a successful challenge from Ng.

Despite the disappointment, Antonsen was not phased as he produced a terrific body shot before sealing the game when Ng sent a lofted return long.

Ng also started strongly in the second game, drawing level at 6-6 but Antonsen managed to forge ahead to wrap up the match.

Antonsen will go up against another Malaysian in Lee Zii Jia in the third round following his 21-11, 21-16 triumph against Canada’s Brian Yang.

There will be an all-Japanese third-round clash between Kenta Nishimoto and Kanta Tsuneyama.

Nishimoto emerged victorious from a thriller against Julien Carraggi, beating the Belgian 24-22, 23-25, 21-8.

Tsuneyama also did not have it all his own way in his 22-20, 21-15 victory over Ukraine’s Danylo Bosniuk.

Fourth seed Kodai Naraoka also delivered success for Japan, beating France’s Toma Junior Popov 21-12, 21-16.

Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu will be his next opponent following his 21-17, 23-21 win against Jason The of Singapore.

Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong also made it through, defeating Uriel Canjura of El Salvador 21-17, 21-11 to seal a clash with Shi.
