Mexico claimed a historic first-ever win at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Women's Baseball World Cup Group A in Thunder Bay, Canada.

They defeated Australia 16-8 in extra innings to retain hopes of bagging a spot at the Finals next year.

The United States and hosts Canada continued their winning run from day one after getting the better of South Korea and Hong Kong, respectively.

In what was a high-scoring day, the Americans won 14-0 to remain top of the standings while Canada triumphed 22-3.

It was a roller coaster of a game for Mexico and Australia, who exchanged leads multiple times.

With an 8-5 lead at the end of the seventh, it looked like Mexico was going for a straightforward win before Tiara Geldenhuist capitalised on a defensive error to send the game to extra innings.

However, Diana Ibarra had the last laugh with a three-run homer as Mexico triumphed by eight runs in the extra.

Earlier, offense was the name of the game for the United States, who recorded a five-inning victory over South Korea.

They scored in every at bat as Ashton Landsell starred with a triple and a homer.

Pitcher Jamie Baum did her part, letting two hits and two walks against five strikeouts.

There was no stopping Alexane Fournier (5-for-6) and Zoe Hicks (3-for-3), with the duo claiming half of the hits for the Canadians.

Canada finished with 16 hits overall while pitcher Julia Konigshofer bowed out with two hits and three runs in in three innings.
