Reigning world champion Khadija Mardi was among the gold medallists as Morocco finished top of the standings at the African Boxing Confederation African Men's and Women's Boxing Championships in Yaoundé.

Mardi captured the women’s light heavyweight crown with a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Marie Joelle Mwika of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Cameroonian capital in an event where each gold medallist received $15,000 (£12,000/€13,500) with the silver and bronze medallists earning $10,000 (£8,000/€9,000) and $5,000 (£4,000/€4,500), respectively. 

She was one of eight champions for Morocco as Widad Bertal triumphed in the women’s bantamweight division, beating Algeria’s Fatma Zohra Abdelkader Hedjala 5-0 in the final.

There was also a victory for Azoui Imad who overcame Franck Mombey of Gabon 5-0 in the men’s bantamweight gold-medal match.

Olympic bronze medallist Mohammed Rabii defeated David Tshama of DR Congo 4-3 in the men’s middleweight final.

The men’s cruiserweight gold-medal bout was also tight with Mohamed Assaghir edging another Congolese opponent in Nathan Landu Mbeli 4-3.

There was more success for Morocco today with Yasmine Mouttaki beating Algeria’s Mansouri Fatiha 4-3 in the women’s minimumweight final following a bout review.

Said Mortaji secured the men’s flyweight crown with a 4-1 win over South Africa’s Sinovuyo Mtintelwa before fellow Moroccan Soulaimane Samghouli saw off Congolese fighter Frazier Matumona Mujinga 5-0 in the men’s featherweight final.

DR Congo placed second in the final medal standings with five golds including one for Boniface Zengala who overcame Mozambique's Delfina Bernardo Marime 5-0 in the men’s welterweight final yesterday.


The rest of DR Congo’s titles came today with Marcelat Sakobi Matshu beating Tunisia’s Hlimi Khouloud 4-1 in the women’s featherweight gold-medal bout and Steve Kulenguluka overcoming Mozambique’s Tiago Osorio Muxanga by the same scoreline in the men’s light middleweight final.

A bout review at the end of the men’s light heavyweight final resulted in Peter Pita delivering another gold for DR Congo with a 4-3 win over Anauel Ngamissengue of Congo.

DR Congo’s final gold medal was won by Jorbelle Malewu Tekasala after beating Cameroon’s Onguene Tsimi Marie Victorine in the women’s heavyweight final.

There was also success for Algeria who claimed four golds, while hosts Cameroon and Mozambique both picked up two titles each.

Both of Cameroon’s golds came today with Laure Reine Ngoune and Zacharie Serge Mvogo claiming the respective women’s flyweight and men’s super heavyweight crowns.
