Two-time winners Germany have been sent crashing out of the FIFA Women's World Cup group stages following a draw against South Korea, while Colombia and debutants Morocco advanced from Group C.

It is the first time in history that the Germans, winners of consecutive titles in 2003 and 2007, have failed to reach the knockout stages as they were held 1-1 at Lang Park in Brisbane, despite a goal from the tournament's joint top-scorer Alexandra Popp.

"To be honest I can't comprehend it," said captain Popp.

"I don't know what I should really say.

"I can't really understand what has happened to be honest."

Popp, part of Germany's team that won the Olympic gold medal at Rio 2016, equalised for her side just before the half-time break after Cho So-hyun gave South Korea the lead after six minutes.

Germany were heading through as group runners-up as the whistle was blown to close out the first 45 minutes but a stoppage-time goal from Morocco's Anissa Lahmari against Colombia at Perth Rectangular Stadium saw them leapfrog over their European rivals.

The strike ended up being the winner and saw Morocco progress with six points to Germany's four, despite losing 6-0 to the European Championship finalists in their first game.

Germany's elimination is being labelled as the biggest shock of the tournament.

"If you want to see a disaster in terms of sport, it's hard to argue against that," said Germany manager Martina Voss-Tecklenburg.

"What we need to do is rise again and not give up.

"We love this sport.

"Of course, you cannot expect a deep analysis yet.

"We need to let it sink in.

"I don't want to look for excuses in anything."

Popp came inches from netting her second goal just minutes after she bundled her first goal over the line.

The 32-year-old powered a header in off the crossbar only for the goal to be ruled out by the video assistant referee for offside.

Germany's players fell to the ground at full-time and were in tears upon realisation of their exit.

Morocco's win meant they reached the last 16 on their tournament debut, while Colombia progress as Group H winners, despite the loss.

The Africans face a tough challenge in the next round as they are scheduled to face Group F winners France in Adelaide next Tuesday (August 8), while Colombia are play Jamaica, another side to have exceeded expectations, in Melbourne on the same day.

Competition takes a break tomorrow following the conclusion of the group stage before the round of 16 is due to begin on Saturday (August 5) with Switzerland against Spain in Auckland and 2011 champions Japan taking on Norway, the winners in 1995, in Wellington.
