Dennis Gonzalez Boneu of Spain admitted he had to make rapid changes to his routine before winning the first World Aquatics Championships free solo gold medal to be awarded to a male swimmer in Fukuoka.

Gonzalez Boneu's routine to "Golden Hour" by JVKE received 193.0334 points to give him gold.

Gustavo Sanchez of Colombia claimed silver with 189.9625 and bronze went to Kenneth Gaudet of the United States with 179.5562.

"It is a solo that I put together in a very short amount of time," admitted Gonzalez Boneu.

"I had to change almost everything from the preliminaries to be able to get a higher score and I think it was a success."

His success comes two days after his countryman Fernando Díaz del Río Soto took the first men's gold in the solo technical.

Japan's Yukiko Inui retained her women's free solo artistic swimming crown with a score of 254.6062 for her routine to "Orochi, The Legendary Giant Snake with Eight Heads" by Toshiyuki Matsumoto.

I am very happy that many people have come to support swimming today, even from my hometown of Shiga Prefecture," Inui said.

"I'm glad that I was able to deliver bright news to everyone who has been supporting me on a daily basis."

Austria's Vasiliki Alexandri claimed silver with 229.3251.

Both had occupied the same positions in the women's solo technical competition earlier in the week.

Kate Shortman who took bronze with 219.9542, was the first British artistic swimmer to win a medal at the World Championships.

"This is just a crazy step in the right direction, hopefully putting us on the map a bit more," Shortman said.

Meanwhile, China's dominance in diving continued as Chen Yuxi won the women's 10m platform for the third consecutive time.

She took gold with 457.85 points and Tokyo Olympic champion Quan Hongchan claimed silver with 445.60.

Bronze went to Canada's Caeli McKay on 340.25.

Chen produced her highest scoring dives early in the competition and though Quan received perfect marks from all seven judges in round four, she was unable to overhaul her Chinese compatriot.

"I am very happy and excited," Chen said.

"When I won a silver medal behind Quan at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, my dream was half fulfilled, now I have higher goals, bigger dreams to pursue."

Chinese divers have now won all nine gold medals in diving.
