International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Geoff Allardice believes the launch of the Major League Cricket (MLC) T20 competition in the United States will boost the sport's bid to be included in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Allardice has confirmed that the ICC will propose the T20 format when it makes its presentation at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Mumbai this October.

"The Olympics want to stage a format that has its World Championship, given that, we will be proposing the shortest format for Olympic inclusion, that would be T20 cricket," Allardice said.

The MLC has six franchised teams, of which four are backed by owners of teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Kolkata Knight Riders own Los Angeles Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians (MI) are behind MI New York, Delhi Capitals own the Seattle Orcas and the Texas Super Kings franchise is bankrolled by Chennai Super Kings.

"There are a number of developments in the USA that are helping to raise awareness of the game, the start of the MLC is one of them, they draw a lot of attention to the sport," Allardice said.

In the opening match held at the Grand Prairie Stadium in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex, Texas Super Kings defeated the Los Angeles Knight Riders by 69 runs, in front of what organisers claimed was a sell out crowd of 7,200.

The inaugural MLC competition is set to run until the end of the month and is scheduled to feature 19 matches in 18 days.

The United States is also to co-host the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with the West Indies.

"I can say with finality that the 2024 men's T20 World Cup will be played in the West Indies and US," Allardice added.

"We have been talking to LA Olympics people for the last 18 months to two years, raising with them the awareness of cricket," Allardice explained.

Nine sports are being considered for inclusion at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and the IOC Session will make the final decision.

The Session is scheduled to be held from October 15 to 17 in Mumbai.
