Britain's Adam Yates pulled off an opening stage victory at the Tour de France after beating his twin brother Simon for the yellow jersey in Bilbao.

The pair, riding respectively for UAE Team Emirates and Team Jayco-AIUIa, went clear from a breakaway group at the top of the Côte de Pike in the latter stages of the curtain-raiser before extending the gap on the descent back into the city.

Having put 20 seconds between themselves and the chasing pack, it was clear that it would be a sibling shootout for the line.

Adam had the power required for the uphill sprint finish to clock in after 4hour 22min 49sec and beat Simon by four seconds.

General classification winner from 2020 and 2021 Tadej Pogačar of Slovenia then finished 12 seconds off the pace to round out the top three.

"It was as if I had won the stage myself or in fact even better," said Pogačar, who also rides for UAE Team Emirates.

"It's a dream to see the team developing like this."

Pogačar was a fraction in front of a group that contained Danish defending champion Jonas Vingegaard.

The result marks Adam Yates' first Tour de France stage win, while he took the young rider classification in 2016.

"Honestly, I don’t even know what to say," he said.

"We tried to set the climb up for Tadej, he attacked but then it was a headwind on the descent.

"My brother came across to me and we started to work together.

"At first I didn't know if I should work with him, I asked on the radio and they said, 'Go for it'.

"I'm speechless.

"I knew he was going good, I speak to him every day.

"My brother and I are close and to share this experience with him is really nice.

"I wish he would pull a bit easier because he almost dropped me at one moment but I'm just super happy."

The Tour is set to continue tomorrow with stage two which sees athletes travel 209 kilometres from Vitoria-Gasteiz to San Sebastián.
