Organisers have reflected on the success of a groundbreaking Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, on the final day of action in Germany.

The multi-sport event for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, has welcomed more than 330,000 spectators during competition, and have helped to spread the message of inclusion according to Special Olympics chief executive Mary Davis.

Speaking at a closing media conference today Davis said: "These Games will be known as the ‘Happy Games’ for years to come - everyone has come together over these last nine days to spread the message of inclusion.

"Berlin has torn down the walls of division and exclusion and has built bridges of inclusion through the power of sport at these Games."

Head of the Organising Committee Sven Albrecht added: "We have surpassed our expectations together.

"We have managed to offer the athletes here a special stage.

"I am quite pleased about the response here in Berlin and all other Germany.

"I would like to thank all those who worked behind the scenes to ensure that the athletes were provided with the best possible environment."

The final day of competition saw 400 metres titles up for grabs as athletics track action came to a close.

Among the male winners were Macau’s Kai Chong Chu who took the men’s M6 title in 1min 03.35sec, while Thepthat Nunseng of Thailand won the men’s M2 category in 53.34sec.

Female champions included Ireland’s Emma Costello who won the women’s F4 event in 1:24.17, while Sheneel Williams of Jamaica claimed the women’s F2 title in 1:11.58.

Medals were also decided in the 3x3 basketball competitions, with three female titles up for grabs.

In the F03 gold-medal match Mauritius edged past France 4-3, while the F02 gold-medal match was a one-sided affair with Ivory Coast thrashing Uruguay 8-0.

F01 gold went to Lithuania, who defeated Italy 5-3.

In the men’s and mixed unified sports team competition, the concluding final today was in the M04 category, with Kuwait taking gold as they narrowly beat the United States 9-8.

Road cycling competition saw road races over 10 kilometres take centre stage on the final day.

Winners included Gareth Borg of Malta in the men’s M04 category in 20:57.22, and Slovakia’s Veronika Mackova in the women’s F01 category in 20:00.79.

Equestrian competition today saw a focus on dressage, with medals awarded in four categories in Level A.

In the D01 category, victory went to Krystian Furmanski of Poland, riding Tenno, with a score of 54.400.

The D02 category went to Rafael Ovalle Calle of Guatemala, riding Acopiara, with a score of 76.400.

In the D03, Christopher Bradley of Britain, onboard Elenco, took gold with a score of 77.000.

Finally in the D04, victory went to Nick Van Rooyen of the Netherlands, riding FBI, with a score of 81.400.

Proceedings are due to conclude with a Closing Ceremony this evening at the Brandenburg Gate, featuring musical entertainment and the ceremonial extinguishing of the Flame.
