Having started with men's and women's kata karate and the men's beach handball titles yesterday, Spain added a further six gold medals on day two in Poland.

Taekwondo provided their most notable success, starting with Hugo Arillo Vazquez who beat Sayyad Dadashov of Azerbaijan 3-0, 3-11, 9-7 in the men's under-54 kilograms final.

He was followed by Olympic silver medallist Adriana Cerezo Iglesias at the Krynica-Zdrój Arena, which is some two-hour drive from Kraków, in the women's under-49kg.

The Spaniard beat Turkey's world champion Merve Dinçel 3-7, 8-5, 10-9 for European Games gold.

Adrian Vicente Yunta completed the Spanish treble in the men's under-58kg, coming from behind to win 11-13, 5-3, 14-11 against Jack Woolley, who won Ireland's first medal of the Games.

Croatia's back-to-back world champion Lena Stojković dominated the day's other taekwondo event, and thrashed Italy's Sofia Zampetti 17-4, 14-10 in the women's under-46kg final.

Dina Pouryounes became the first European Olympic Committees Refugee Team athlete to compete at the European Games in that event, beating Lana Komnenovic of Serbia in three rounds before losing to Zampetti in the quarter-finals.

Spain's first gold of the day came in canoe sprint at a cloudy Kryspinów Waterway, where action in the morning's heats was delayed by thunderstorms which hit the Małopolska region and affected other outdoor competition including archery in Kraków and sport climbing in Tarnów.

Saúl Craviotto, Carlos Arévalo, Marcus Cooper and Rodrigo Germade dominated the men's K4 500 metres race to triumph in 1min 19.964sec, with Ukraine in second clocking 1:20.500 and Serbia in third in 1:20.800.

A Spanish team technical artistic swimming gold performance which scored 278.4066 smashed the competition at the Oświęcim Aquatics Centre, with Italy their closest challengers notching 249.1145 and France 242.6716.

Artistic swimming had provided the day's first gold medal for Israel with a 248.6083, which was more than 75 points clear of Germany in the free routine combination.

Daniel Arce's men's 3,000m steeplechase success at the Silesian Stadium was Spain's other gold of the day.

Italy also enjoyed a prosperous day as they moved on to eight golds, beginning with Paolo Monna and Sara Constantino who beat Armenia's Benik Khlghatyan and Elmira Karapetyan 17-7 in the mixed team 10m air pistol final and Danilo Dennis Sollazzo who won the men's 10m air rifle at the Wrocław Shooting Centre.

Nina Christen of Switzerland was the other shooting gold medallist, winning the women's 10m air rifle to seal a Paris 2024 Olympics quota place for her country, a feat also achieved by Sollazzo.

Chiara Pellacani and Matteo Santoro won the mixed synchronised 3m springboard diving gold for Italy at the Rzeszów Diving Arena, beating Britain's Grace Reid and James Healy by eight points.

Britain won the day's other diving gold, with Eden Cheng climbing from fourth to first with a sensational final backwards 2.5 somersaults with 1.5 twists with pike which scored 73.60 to finish on 331.60, beating Germany's Christina Wassen with 330.95 and Italy's Sarah Jodoin Di Maria with 320.10.

Athletics success for Italy came in the women's hammer throw, men's triple jump and men's 100m.

Hosts Poland moved on to six golds, helped by canoe sprint success for Karolina Naja and Anna Puławska in 1:40.952 in the women's K2 500m and Dorota Borowska in the women's C1 200m in 46.653sec.

Henrikas Žustautas of Lithuania in the men's C1 200m, Denmark's three-time Olympic medallist Emma Jørgensen in the women's K1 200m and Portugal's Messias Baptista in the men's K1 200m were the day's other canoe sprint winners.

Karate competition concluded today with six medal events at the Bielsko-Biała Arena.

Ukraine's only gold of the day came through Andrii Zaplitnyi against Italy's Daniele De Vivo in the men's kumite under-75kg final, with his compatriot Anita Serogina having to settle for silver after losing to Germany's Reem Khamis.

World champion Irina Zaretska triumphed 4-1 over Switzerland's Elena Quirici for women's under-68kg gold, and Albania won its first medal of Kraków-Małopolska 2023 thanks to Alvin Karaqi in the men's under-84kg final against Brian Timmermans of The Netherlands.

Germany's Johanna Kneer beat Italy's Clio Ferracuti by senshu after a 5-5 draw for women's over-65kg gold, and Croatia's Anđelo Kvesić overpowered Turkey's Fatih Şen 5-0 in the men's over-84kg final.

Lukas Knapp of Austria won the day's other gold in the men's speed sport climbing event at the Tarnów Climbing Centre, clocking 5.892sec to beat Marceau Garnier of France with 6.404 although Poland's Marcin Dzieński notched a quicker time of 5.466 in the bronze-medal match against France's Pierre Rebreyend.

The Kraków-Małopolska 2023 European Games is due to continue tomorrow with medal events across nine sports, including the end of the 3x3 basketball tournaments and canoe sprinting.
