The United States finished with most points at the 2023 International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) World Open Classic Powerlifting Championships in Malta.

The Americans bagged gold in three weight categories and a silver and bronze out of seven weight categories for men.

Wascar Carpio in the 59 kilograms, Delaney Wallace in the 83 kg and Jonathan Cayco in the 93 kg all won gold.

The 66kg battle saw Panagiotis Tarinidis of France pip Brian Le for the title, helping the Europeans to finish as the second-best nation in the men's events.

Le has been in good form recently, having lifted a total of 713.5kg at the 2023 Powerlifting America Classic National Championships, an effort that could have been a world record if it was an international event.

Carl Johansson of Sweden won the 74kg gold medal, as his country came third in the overall classification among men while Tony Cliffe ensured Britain stood on top of the podium by winning the 120kg class.

Ukrainian Anatolii Novopismennyi emerged victorious in the 105kg event and won the best lifter of the Open award.

Defending champion Emil Norling of Sweden could only manage silver despite being billed as the favourite before the tournament while Mohamed Abdulla Mohamed Ahmeed of Libya came in third as expected.

In the women's competition, the United States won two gold, two silver and one bronze medal.

Tiffany Chapon, the 47kg star, won the world title to give France the head start in the women's events before Evie Corrigan of New Zealand struck gold in the 52kg class.

Natalie Richards in the 57kg and Amanda Lawrence in the 84 kg came out on top in their respective categories for the US.

Richards recently became the first American to total over 500kg in the weight class.

Italian Carola Garra was unstoppable in the 63kg battle with American Scanlon Meghan finishing second and compatriot Chiara Bernardi completing the last podium spot.

France had another champion when Prescillia Bavoil won the 69kg title as Karlina Tongotea of New Zealand secured the under-76kg title.
