Ryan Crouser of the United States raised his own men’s world shot put record to 23.38 metres at the indoor Simplot Games in Pocatello in Idaho.

The 30-year-old world and Olympic champion thus added a centimetre to the mark he set outdoors at the 2021 United States trials and made a huge improvement on his 2021 world indoor record of 22.82m.

Crouser unveiled a new technique, in which he shifts his starting point to the right and adds an extra step into his spin to generate more momentum, at last week’s Millrose Games in New York City.

He used it to produce an effort of 22.58m which topped the season’s world list.

But he admitted that the new approach had led to some inconsistency in his throwing, adding: "Hopefully we can get that worked out in the coming months."

His 23.38m performance on the campus of Idaho State University in Pocatello, which was achieved in the first round of the competition, came from a static start, rather than his new technique, meaning he will hope to go even farther as he perfects his new throwing style.

Crouser thought he had thrown 23.38m at last year’s Millrose Games when that mark came up on the digital scoreboard, only to learn that the effort was null and void because of a defective laser.

The 30-year-old has now surpassed 23 metres in a total of seven competitions during his career so far.

It is a mark that only three other athletes in history have ever bettered.

“It’s a very big surprise for my career just now,” Crouser posted on Instagram.

“I didn’t expect to do 23.38 today.”
