Fanny Smith and Daniela Maier will both be classed as Beijing 2022 ski cross bronze medallists after an agreement was reached between the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) plus German and Swiss national governing bodies.

Smith crossed the line third in the women's Olympic final 10 months ago, but the race jury demoted her to fourth place because of a clash with Maier.

Swiss-Ski and Smith appealed the punishment and the FIS Appeals Commission overturned it, ruling contact between racers was "neither intentional or avoidable".

This led Maier, the German Ski Association and the German Olympic Sports Confederation to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for her to be reinstated as the bronze medallist.

After discussions under the CAS umbrella, a decision has been reached for both Maier and Smith to be awarded a bronze medal and classed as finishing third.

The FIS has agreed to place both athletes third and the International Olympic Committee has agreed to give both a bronze medal, according to the CAS.

The CAS added the consent award agreed to by the parties will not be published.

Sweden's Sandra Näslund won the final and Canadian Marielle Thompson was second.

The bronze medal is Smith's second, after finishing third at Pyeongchang 2018, but Maier's first Olympic medal.
