Four of the finals were all-Japanese clashes at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

That included the women's under-57 kilograms event, in which Haruka Funakubo won her fourth Grand Slam gold medal at the expense of Tsukasa Yoshida.

An all-Japanese podium was completed by Momo Tamaoki and Akari Omori, who beat South Korea's Huh Mi-mi and Poland's Julia Kowalczyk in the bronze medal bouts.

The women's under-63kg category also featured four home favourites on the podium.

Miku Takaichi overcame Seiko Watanabe in the final, while world champion Megumi Horikawa had to settle for bronze by beating Australia's Katharina Haecker, a feat matched by compatriot Nami Nabekura against Poland's Angelika Szymańska.

The other women's weight category which featured competition on the first day was the under-70kg, won by Saki Niizoe against Australia's Aoife Coughlan.

Greece's Elisavet Teltsidou beat Romania's Serafina Moscalu to take bronze, and was joined in joint-third by Spain's Ai Tsunoda Roustant after her victory against Venezuela's Elvismar Rodríguez.

On the men's side, there was Japanese dominance at under-73kg and under-81kg as the hosts won three of the four available medals.

Soichi Hashimoto collected his sixth Grand Slam gold medal by beating Hayato Koga in the under-73kg final, and home favourite Ken Oyoshi beat Belgium's Abdul Malik Umayev to take bronze.

The other bronze medal went to Poland's Ksawery Morka, who collected her first World Judo Tour medal at the expense of Germany's Igor Wandtke.

In the under-81kg final, Japan's Kenya Kohara overcame compatriot and Olympic champion Takanori Nagase to take gold.

Their compatriot Sotaro Fujiwara beat Canada's François Gauthier Drapeau to take bronze, but France's Alpha Oumar Djalo denied Japan another podium clean sweep with his win against Takeshi Sasaki.

The other men's weight class featuring competition today was the under-90kg, won by Kosuke Mashiyama.

Mashiyama beat Georgia's Olympic champion Lasha Bekauri in the semi-finals, and then defeated Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Eduard Trippel of Germany in the final.

Sanshiro Murao won an all-Japanese bronze medal bout against Shoichiro Mukai, while Bekauri recovered from his semi-final defeat to place joint-third with victory against home favourite Mashu Baker.

The IJF Tokyo Grand Slam is set to conclude tomorrow with the remaining weight categories.
