In a cruel twist of fate, Ireland were missing another one of its stars at the European Championships, as 20-year-old world champion Lisa O'Rourke missed the chance to win European gold in the same year, due to injury.

However, her older sister Aoife O'Rourke ensured the family trophy cabinet would be added to after beating Elżbieta Wójcik of Poland in the under-75kg final.

Ireland would finish top of the medals table thanks to Amy Broadhurst, who made her 2022 season an unforgettable one.

With victory over Ukraine's Mariia Bova in the under-63kg, she finished the year with gold medals at the World Championships, Commonwealth Games and European Championships.

Ani Hovsepyan of Armenia defeated Ireland's Christina Desmond in the under-70kg final, while the country's other gold-medal hope Caitlin Fryers, was defeated by world champion and Olympic silver medallist Buse Naz Çakıroğlu at under-50kg, with the Turkish boxer successfully defending her title.

These results saw Ireland top the medals table by a single silver medal to Ukraine, who also won three golds.

Tetyana Kob claimed her third European gold in the under-52kg final by beating Venelina Poptoleva from Bulgaria, while her team-mate Anastasiia Kovalchuk did the same at under-54kg against Bojana Gojković from Montenegro, who was unable to win the host nation a gold medal after the match ended by referee's stoppage.

Mariia Lovchynska won against Azerbaijan's Aynur Rzayeva in the over-81kg final too.

Olympic bronze and world silver medallist Irma Testa successfully defended her under-57kg title by beating Svetlana Staneva of Bulgaria, while world bronze medallist Sevda Asenova was the lightest victor of the day, with the Bulgarian claiming the under-48kg gold medal by defeating Roberta Bonatti unanimously.

Young Lithuanian Gabrielė Stonkutė added to her world title in Istanbul by defeating Martyna Jancelewicz of Poland in the under-81kg final, and Stefanie von Berge from Germany won at under-66kg against Poland's Aneta Rygielska.
