Belgian Remco Evenepoel of Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl smashed the rest of the field during the time trial from Elche to Alicante at the Vuelta a España to win the 10th stage, extending his lead to the chasing Slovenian Primož Roglič, who became his closest challenger in the race.

After a brave effort in the mountains on stage nine, Evenepoel held a 1min 12sec lead over Spain's Enric Mas and 1:53 in front of the defending champion Roglič of Jumbo-Visma - and looked to pull away more, attacking the 30.9-kilometre route from the off.

A rest day served him well, with the general classification leader crossing the line in 33min 18sec.

This was 48 seconds in front of Roglič, who paced his ride well to move into second at the finish line, but unable to overturn the speed of his rival.

It marked the first time the Jumbo-Visma rider has lost a time trial in Spain.

For a portion of the time trial, it looked as if it would be a Quick-Step one-two as Frenchman Remi Cavagna continued to keep those behind him and was up on the splits compared to the Slovenian.

However, the two-time Vuelta champion Roglič took 12 seconds out of him in the end, meaning Cavagna finished third.

Spain's Carlos Rodriguez and Pavel Sivakov, both from Ineos Grenadiers, completed the top five, finishing within 90 seconds of Evenepoel.

American Lawson Craddock and Simon Yates from Team BikeExchange-Jayco were seventh and eighth, while Ineos Grenadiers rider Tao Geoghegan Hart returned to the overall top 10 after finishing eighth today - recovering from a late crash on stage nine that ended his hopes of winning the Vuelta.

Mas of Movistar was the biggest sufferer today, dropping from second to third in the overall standings and 1:51 down on Evenepoel after placing 10th behind Colombian Miguel Ángel López of Astana.
