The Mexican Olympic Committee (COM) has extended a collaboration agreement with the Hiroshima Prefecture in Japan with a view to the Paris 2024 Olympics.

An initial agreement was reached prior to Tokyo 2020, enabling the COM to share facilities offered by the prefecture to National Federations in Japan.

This is set to continue under the latest arrangement, with the possibility of Mexican athletes using Hiroshima for preparation camps for future competitions.

COM President María José Alcalá Izguerra expressed her thanks to Hidehiko Yuzaki, the Governor of Hiroshima, for his support.

"I appreciate the willingness and encouragement of the Hiroshima Prefecture and Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki to sign a collaboration agreement with the Mexican Olympic Committee," Alcalá Izguerra said.

"This type of agreement benefits the Japanese and Mexican delegations for their preparation in different disciplines.

"In addition, this agreement strengthens the ties of friendship and collaboration between both parties by following up on the one signed for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games."

COM secretary general Mario García de la Torre and legal director Juan Francisco García, Mexican Paralympic Committee President Liliana Suárez and Mexican ambassador to Japan Melba Pría were present at the meeting which reaffirmed the agreement.

Alcalá Izguerra's predecessor Carlos Padilla Becerra received recognition from the Hiroshima authorities, who were represented by officials including the Mayor Kazimi Matsui.

Mexico won four bronze medals at the Summer Olympic Games on Japanese soil last year, sending a team of 162 athletes.

It sent four competitors to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, but failed to win a medal.

Its last gold came at London 2012 in the men's football tournament.

Mexico City staged the Olympics in 1968.
