Hungary were on form in the preliminary stages of the men's épée, with many home fencers progressing to the last 64 on the opening day of the International Fencing Federation Budapest Grand Prix.

Tibor Andrasfi was one of those to qualify - first by beating Ilian Bobrov of Estonia 15-9 before beating compatriot Mate Csabai 15-11.

Balint Bakos moved through too, first by the narrowest of margins when he defeated Marc Housieaux of Belgium.

He made it into tomorrow's competition by winning 15-9 against Czech Republic's Martin Capek.

Seventh seed in the preliminary round Zsombor Banyai won 15-13 against Estonian Sten Priinits before knocking out Jan Schuhmann of Austria 15-12.

Daniel Berta is into the final 64 draw after first disposing of team mate Peter Szenyi 15-10 and then beating Denmark's Frederik von der Osten 14-13.

The final Hungarian to make it through was Zsombor Keszthelyi after beating Hong Kong's Ho Wai Hang 15-11 and then American second seed Sean White 15-10.

Already automatically qualified as the higher seeds are Hungarians Andras Redli, David Nagy, Mate Tomas Koch, Jonathan Hamilton-Meike and second seed Gergely Siklosi.

Top seed from the preliminaries - Davide Di Veroli of Italy - was eliminated in the final round before tomorrow by Israel's Grigori Beskin by a score of 15-7.

All of the top four seeds were knocked out - with Italian number three Valerio Cuomo losing to Manuel Bargues of Spain 15-11, and Kazakhstan's Ruslan Kurbanov going down 15-10 to Denmark's Conrad Seibaek Kongstad.

Fifth seed Michele Niggeler of Switzerland lost 15-10 to Brazil's Alexandre Camargo and American sixth seed Justin Haddad went down to Finland's Julius Jutila 15-11 in his first match.
