The Scots will join hosts New Zealand, Australia and Wales in Pool A after prevailing in the final qualification tournament.

Scotland, who are ranked ninth in the world, were favourites before kick-off but knew that world number 25 Colombia had the potential to cause an upset.

However, first-half tries from Lisa Thomson, Megan Gaffney, Rhona Lloyd and Sarah Law put the game beyond doubt as Scotland cruised to a 59-3 victory.

"I am so proud of the team, this has been a long journey, but now we are going to a World Cup and we are so happy," said Scotland head coach Bryan Easson.

"I was pleased with how we controlled this game and now we can start building towards New Zealand."

The final whistle sparked ecstatic celebrations among the Scotland players as they secured qualification to the World Cup for the first time since 2010.

"It's the best feeling I've felt in my entire life," said Scotland captain Rachel Malcolm.

"It probably sounds a bit over the top but as a wee girl I dreamt of playing in this shirt, as did everyone in that squad today and to go out there and play with some of my best mates and perform for Scotland and get Scotland into a Rugby World Cup - I can't even begin to explain how much it means to me and to everyone in that changing room."

Colombia shocked world number 15 Kazakhstan in the semi-final with a famous 18-10 triumph, despite playing with only 14 players for 65 minutes after an early red card to Mestra Diaz.

"This trip to Dubai has been a great experience for us," said Colombia head coach Lissete Martinez after the final defeat.

"To play against a team of the quality of Scotland shows us the levels we want to try to get to and now we want to try and push on and grow women’s rugby in our country.

"For us to do that we have to play test matches and get more games against good sides, but we hope what we have done in Dubai has inspired young girls in our country to take up the sport."

New Zealand is set to host the 2021 Rugby World Cup later this year from October 8 to November 12, after the event - which retains the same branding - was delayed because of the coronavirus crisis.
