The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) has announced it has outright cancelled the World Beach Ultimate Championships (WBUC), rather than postponing the event again.

The WFDF made the decision alongside the California Ultimate Association Local Organising Committee (LOC) following substantial late team withdrawals and reduced income.

The event, originally due to take place last November, was postponed last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The WBUC planned to host around 100 National Beach Ultimate teams, but numerous dropouts made the Championships unplayable competitively, as well as impacting the financial success of the tournament.

"The uncertainty of travel restrictions and lack of training abilities for a lot of teams due to the ongoing pandemic has seen the numbers dwindle over the past few months.," Robert Rauch, President of the WFDF, said.

"To all the teams that have been training for this competition, it was important for the LOC and WFDF to be able to present you with a world-class event that was value for money and one that offered a competitive schedule worthy of the sacrifices each player made through training and investments."

The WFDF has asked the LOC to undergo a process of working with vendors and suppliers to see if player and team fees, which have already been paid, can be reclaimed.

They have also committed to reimbursing the full amount of player fees and handing back a high percentage of team fees to those who were set to participate.

Grant Boyd, who led the LOC in the competition’s planning and preparation since their successful bid to host the championships in 2019, claimed devastation is an “understatement”.

"We hold our heads up high knowing the effort and joy that was put into this event, and we pledge to bring this event back to California when the global landscape is right," he said.

"While WBUC won’t be making waves this April, California Ultimate will be refocusing on developing youth programs and alternative competition structures in the greater LA area and across the state - always seeking to keep Ultimate growing."

Currently the WFDF are hosting the inaugural Virtual Sport World Team Disc Golf Championship, due to finish on February 20, and they remain obligated to preparing for other major events scheduled to place in June, July, and August later this year.

The World Junior Ultimate Championships (WJUC), the World Maters Ultimate Club Championships (WMUCC), World Ultimate Club Championships (WUCC), disc golf, and overall tournaments are still scheduled to take place, in addition to the International World Games Association’s World Games.

The Irish city of Limerick is expected to host the 117 team WMUCC in June.

In the next month, the United States’ San Diego is due host the World Overall Flying Disc Championships, and the 128 team WUCC is scheduled to take place in Ohio.

August is another busy month with the World Team Disc Golf Championships (WTDGC) scheduled for Croatia and the WJUC to be staged in Punta Cana of the Dominican Republic.

So far, 23 teams have committed to the WTDGC and may reach as much as 30 - a substantial increase to the six teams who took part in the first event in 2016.
