As reported by the New Zealand Herald, an investigation from Wellington-based QC Victoria Casey found that Thompson's conduct "was unbecoming of a CRNZ member, and contrary to CRNZ's goals".

The investigation's findings were accepted by the Board, and delegates from CRNZ's 16 member clubs voted to expel Thompson.

Thompson, who won K1 1000 metres and K4 1000m golds at Los Angeles 1984, was accused in October last year of making "inappropriate sexualised remarks" in 1998 and 2014.

A complaint was then made by a former athlete who said Thompson deliberately exposed himself to her in Europe in 1991.

Casey also criticised how a formal complaint was handled at the time of the incident, finding that the "process followed to address the complaint was inadequate and the complaint was left unresolved".

Thompson's continued denial of the allegations, his lack of remorse and the impact of his conduct on female athletes were among the reasons for his expulsion from CRNZ, according to the New Zealand Herald.

His lawyer David Fraundorfer told Stuff: "Mr Thompson is saddened that his relationship with CRNZ has ended after his many years of service to the sport.

"Even so, he does not regret speaking out in relation to the welfare issues the sport faced.

"He continues to reject the allegations made against him and highlights that he was willing to participate in a process such as an arbitration that would allow him to call witnesses in support, test the substance of the complaints and put forward his case."
