International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF) President Thomas Kähr has stepped down with immediate effect over what he termed "unsolvable strategic and operational disagreements".

Regula Meier, the ISMF's vice-president treasurer, has taken charge of the organisation on an interim basis.

Kähr, who had been President since 2019, notably saw the sport added to the programme for the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics on his watch.

The Swiss official was due to serve as President until September 2023, but has blamed "personal attacks" and "unsolvable strategic and operational disagreements" for the decision to resign.

Another Swiss, Meier, takes over Presidential duties on an interim basis until the ISMF's 2022 Plenary Assembly, when a full-time successor to Kähr will be elected.

They will then complete the term to 2023.

"I was elected in 2019 to invest my experience and my energy into the development of the ski mountaineering sport," Kähr said following his resignation.

"Unfortunately, important, unsolvable strategic and operational disagreements as well as personal attacks led me to step down immediately".

A five-year broadcast deal with Eurovision Sport and collaboration with prestigious race organiser La Grande Course have also been hailed as landmark achievements of Kähr's Presidency.

But it is inclusion at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games - ratified by the International Olympic Committee Session in Tokyo earlier this year - which has the potential to leave the greatest legacy.
