A new winner of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup is guaranteed in Moscow after Brazil were sent home by Senegal.

The African champions were 3-1 down after two periods, but goals from Raoul Mendy and Mandione Diagne sent the game to extra time.

A quickfire double from the same duo gave Senegal a 5-3 lead, and although Rodrigo got a goal back for Brazil in a manic three-minute period of added time, Senegal held on.

Senegal had never reached the last four before, and will play Japan, who also won 5-4 after extra time.

In an eerily similar last-eight clash, Japan drew 3-3 with Tahiti in regular time but won 5-4 after the extra period, with Takuya Akaguma scoring the winner.

Switzerland smashed Uruguay 10-1 at the Luzhniki Beach Soccer Stadium, with Glenn Hodel scoring four goals, while a Russian Football Union (RFU) team beat Spain 4-2 and await in the other semi-final.

Russia won this event in 2011 and 2013, but with the country’s name and flag officially banned from the event under World Anti-Doping Agency sanctions - yet still hosting it - it would be the RFU label added to the trophy should the side be successful.

Japan have never reached the final before, while Switzerland have only done so once, in 2009.

Tomorrow is a rest day ahead of semi-finals on Saturday (August 28).
