Slovenian Primoz Roglič lost the race lead on the tenth stage of the Vuelta a España after crashing, while Michael Storer of Australia won a second stage of this year’s race after riding clear of a large breakaway.

Roglič, riding for Jumbo-Visma, started the day with a 28 second advantage at the top of the general classification, but lost the leader's red jersey, La Roja, after crashing on a bend while descending the category two Puerto de Almachar.

The leader’s jersey was claimed by Norwegian Odd Christian Eiking, after the Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux rider finished fifth on the stage.

Eiking was part of a 31 man breakaway that formed with 87 kilometres to go, which also included Storer, riding for Team DSM, who attacked on the steeper slopes of the Almachar before riding impressively on a downhill stretch to clinch the stage victory.

Roglič got away from his general classification rivals on the same stretch of the Almachar, but his crash allowed them to bridge the gap.

Storer claimed the stage win in a time of 4hrs 9mins 21sec, finishing 22 seconds clear of a group of four riders - Belgium’s Mauri Vansevenant of Deceuninck-Quick-Step, France’s Clement Champoussin of AG2R Citroen Team, The Netherlands Dylan Van Baarle of Ineos Grenadiers and Eiking, the new race leader.

In the general classification, Eiking has a 58 second lead over France’s Guillaume Martin of Cofidis, with Roglič in third place at 2:17 adrift.

Two Movistar riders complete the overall top five - with Spain’s Enric Mas in fourth at 2:45 and Colombian Miguel Angel Lopez fifth at 3:38 behind Eiking.

Storer, who won stage seven of this year’s race as well as today’s stage, the first after the opening rest day, is in 34th place overall.

Tomorrow’s 11th stage takes the race on a 133.6km route from Antequera to Valdepenas de Jaen.
