German rider Phil Bauhaus of Bahrain Victorious claimed victory on the opening leg of the 2021 Tour de Pologne, covering a flat route from Lublin to Chełm in Poland.

He crossed the line after his sprint on the cobbled terrain saw him overtake Colombian Álvaro Hodeg of Deceuninck-QuickStep, who finished second, in front of France's Hugo Hofstetter of Israel Start-Up Nation.

Bauhaus finished the 216.4 kilometre route in 5 hrs 1min 24sec.

Belgium's Edward Theuns of Trek-Segafredo and Dutch rider David Dekker of Team Jumbo-Visma completed the top five.

After taking time bonuses into account, Bauhaus holds a four-second lead over Hodeg and young Kazakh Yevgeniy Fedorov of Astana-Premier Tech, while Hofstetter and Poland's Michał Kwiatkowski of Ineos Grenadiers are six and seven seconds adrift respectively.

Germany's Pascal Ackermann of Bora-Hansgrohe - who recently confirmed his move to UAE Team Emirates for 2022 - abandoned the race with his team confirming he was unwell last week and had not fully recovered.

A hilly second stage from Zamość to Przemyśl is set to take place tomorrow, covering 200.8 kilometres.
