Their medal haul of seven golds, seven silvers and five bronzes gave them a total of 19; while six other nations who also made the podium, won 23 between them.

Renáta Csay and Zsófia Czéllai contributed one of those golds, having won the women's K2 race in 2 hours 00min 35.22sec.

Almost two minutes behind were the French pair of Amelie Kessler and Yseline Huet, who held off another Hungarian pair - Rebeka Szmrtyka and Panna Sinkó - for the silver.

Marton Kover and Marton Horvath gave the Hungarians another gold on the final day by winning the men's C2 in 1:58.20.25 - more than two minutes ahead of silver medallists Rui Lacerda and Ricardo Coelho of Portugal.

The bronze medal went to Mateusz Borgiel and Mateusz Zuchora of Poland, three minutes off the winners.

Kover also won the men's C1 gold medal in 2:06:26.40 - finishing nearly five minutes in front of the silver medallist Roman Erlinekov of Russia, while the Hungarian's compatriot Daniel Laczo won bronze.

A close one-two for Hungary came in the women's K1, with Vanda Kiszli crossing the line in 2:06:58.00 ahead of K2 winner Czéllai by less than two seconds.

Serbia's Kristina Bedeč was the bronze medal winner.

Zsófia Kisbán added another gold for Hungary in the women's C1 in 1:24:51.99; but the fight between eventual silver and bronze medallists was the most interesting as Russia's Maria Kazakova crossed the line just under nine seconds ahead of Adrianna Antos of Poland.

She had previously won the women's C1 sprint in 17min 50.84sec - also ahead of Kazakova and Antos.

In the other sprint races, Poland's Borgiel won the men's C1 in 15:43.24 ahead of Hungarian Laczo and Russian Erlinekov; while Serbia's Bedeč won the women's K1 in a blanket finish with Kiszli and Czellai of Hungary - winning in 15:20.80.

The podium was covered by less than two seconds.

Portugal's Jose Ramalho won the men's K1 sprint by just over a second in 13:43.44 from France's Quentin Urban, while Adrián Boros of Hungary was third.

Ramalho later added a second gold in the men's K1 in an exciting finish that saw the top four separated by 2.4 seconds.

His time of 2:14:59.56 was a second ahead of France's Cyrille Carre, while Carre's compatriot Stephane Boulanger won the bronze from Boros by 0.32.

Ramalho could not win a third gold in the final race of the Championships, finishing runner-up with team-mate Ricardo Carvalho to the French pairing of Urban and Jeremy Candy who clocked a time of 2:01:26.36.

Hungarians Boros and Krisztián Máthé were the bronze medallists.
