The Russian Yachting Federation's (RYF) Denis Taradin and the United States' Daniela Moroz claimed the gold medals in the men's and women's KiteFoil World Series season opener at Hang Loose Beach in Gizzeria.

In the first of five events of the 2021 season, both had been leading early in the competition in Italy.

Taradin was taken down to the wire with France's Axel Mazella only one point behind him in the final ranking and the winner of the second race on the final day with the pair finishing on 24 and 25 points respectively.

Claiming the bronze medal was Slovenian Toni Vodisek who was far off the score of the top two with 53, but seems to have recovered effectively from injuries in 2019 that ended his season.

He finished third ahead of France's Theo De Ramecourt on best results as he also finished on 53 points.

Poema Newland of France was 34th overall for silver with 321 points and Britain's Ellie Aldridge was 37th on 336, making her the third fastest woman.

"I am super happy, both boys and girls put up a nice fight and made it so much fun," said Moroz.

"I am happy I managed to take each race at a time, and just kept following the plan even if some things didn't go the right way.

"For the next event I would to improve on anything, there's always room for improvement."

The next leg of the World Series is set to take place in Traunsee in Austria from September 15 to 19.
