The World Draughts Championship is set to get underway in Tallinn in Estonia, with 40 players due to compete in the men's competition and 16 in the women's at Hotel Viru.

Russian world champions Alexander Georgiev and Tamara Tansykkuzhina are scheduled to defend their respective titles, which they won back in 2019.

Both - and other Russian players - will be under the Russian Draughts Federation banner, in line with the World Anti-Doping Agency's sanctions against Russia because of the doping scandal, which include competing under a neutral flag.

In the men's competition, Georgiev's main rival is expected to be Roel Boomstra of The Netherlands, who won the world title in 2016 and 2018, while Dutch youngster Jan Groenendijk will look to improve on his second place finishes in 2015 and 2016.

Latvia's Guntis Valneris, who won the world title back in 1994, will look to be in similar form to 2019, when he claimed the bronze medal.

Estonians Prrit Lokotar and Kris Taimre will be flying the flag for the hosts.

In the women's event, Poland's Natalia Sadowska, world champion in 2016 and 2018, will look to add a third world title as Tansykkuzhina's main opponent.

Tansykkuzhina's compatriot Aygul Idrisova will look to improve on her second place finish two years ago.

Estonians Karmen Kuusik and Triinu Jalg are also set to represent their home country.

Competition in the men's and women's events is set to conclude on July 14.
